The American Red Cross Greater Miami & The Keys announced today that Samsung Electronics Latinoameria Miami, Inc. presented the chapter with $10,000 to be used for the ongoing Haiti relief efforts. This is in addition to $1 million donation Samsung has already made to the Korean Red Cross.

“We are humbled to be able to help our neighbors in Haiti in their moment of greatest need,” said Mr. Geun Kang, Chief Financial Officer of Samsung Electronics Latinoamerica Miami, Inc. “We are proud to be able to support the Red Cross in their tireless efforts to help Haiti rebuild their lives and communities.”

“The American Red Cross is committed to helping the people of Haiti recover from this most devastating of disasters,” said Sam Tidwell, CEO of the American Red Cross Greater Miami & The Keys. “With the support and generosity of companies such as Samsung we will be able to sustain the amount of long-term support that is so desperately needed in Haiti.”

To date, the American Red Cross has spent or committed $78 million to meet the most urgent needs of earthquake survivors. Seventy-one percent of the funds spent or committed by the American Red Cross have been used to purchase food and water; 20 percent for shelter and the rest for health and family services.

Locally, American Red Cross volunteers in Monroe, Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties have welcomed back more than 12,543 US citizens who have been flown from Haiti to South Florida., providing them with comfort and serving them more than 8,959 meals.

This is already the largest single-country relief operation in global Red Cross history in terms of emergency relief teams deployed. The American Red Cross and its partners are now producing almost 1 million liters of clean drinking water per day and are seeing approximately 600 patients per day. More than 56 flights carrying Red Cross aid from around the world have arrived in Haiti.

Although Red Cross relief supplies continue to arrive in Haiti and more food, water, and relief supplies are reaching survivors in the capital city and outlying areas, the needs remain great.
